Your MTF Top Surgery Journey

Consultation

Consultation forms the first phase of your MTF Top Surgery journey. Here you will have an in-depth discussion with your care provider about the procedure to see if you meet the criteria to undergo the procedure. Dr Briggs will take a detailed medical history. He will also ask you about your goals for the procedure. Here it would help if you were honest and reasonable about your expectations. This can help you in getting your desired outcome.

Various options regarding the implants will be discussed; which includes:

  • Type of Implant to use: Saline, Silicone.
  • Breast implant incision locations – Incisions can be made within the lower breast creases (Inframammary), around the areola complexes (peri-areolar incision) or the armpit (transaxillary)
  • Breast implant shape and size: It is important to make the breast appear proportional to your overall physique.
  • Implant texture.
  • Breast implant placement –Breast Implants can be placed below the breast tissue but above the pectoral muscles (sub-glandular placement) or they can be inserted above the chest wall but beneath the pectoral muscles (sub-muscular placement)

Your surgeon will discuss all of these options with you and will choose the best breast augmentation procedure that suits your needs.

You will be explained the modality of the procedure in full, along with the risks involved. You should be inquisitive as much as possible, and ask if you have any queries or doubts.

You will be expected to refrain from using aspirin or other blood-thinning to prevent excessive bruising.

The Procedure

This is the second phase of your journey.

Breast enhancement surgery is performed under general anaesthetic and takes about 2 hours. It is done on an outpatient basis, meaning you can go home on the day of the surgery itself after a few hours of monitoring.

  • In the operation theatre, you will be anaesthetised using a general anaesthetic under the care of a Specialist Anaesthetist.
Surgery
  • After you are anaesthetised, an incision is made around your nipple or below the breast in inframammary breast folds or near the armpit. The incision is around 5cm in size.
  • Pockets are made behind each breast to accommodate the implants.
  • Implants of your choice are then inserted into these pockets made above or below the pectoral muscle through the incisions and adjusted symmetrically.
  • When the implants are in place, your surgeon then closes the pockets using absorbable sutures and the site of incision using non-absorbable sutures.
  • The incision site is then bandaged after getting sutured.

Recovery

You will be allowed to go home on the day of surgery following initial observation. You will need someone to drive you home as you will not be able to drive for about a week following surgery. You will be advised bed rest for a few days after the surgery. The surgical bra should be worn for about 4-6 weeks.

Your dressing will be changed 5-7 days following surgery. Light exercises can be resumed after two weeks. Avoid upper body exercises for a few weeks as it may cause your implants to be displaced. Heavy lifting should be avoided. Jobs requiring minimum stress can be resumed within a week of surgery. Resuming strenuous works should be delayed for at least 8 weeks. Proper results of the surgery will be visible in about 10-12 weeks. Scarring fades away over time but does not disappear completely.
