What Causes Sagging Skin the Leads to Arm Reduction Surgery?

Several factors can lead to the development of sagging skin on your arms that give you a “batwing” appearance. These include the following:

  • Ageing: As you age, collagen production starts to diminish. This in turn causes your skin to lose its firmness and elasticity because collagen is the main structural protein that holds your tendons, cartilage, and skin in place.
  • Weight fluctuations: Significant weight loss can have a negative impact on the appearance of your upper arms and other body parts. When you lose a large amount of weight, you will likely develop loose and sagging skin on your upper arms because carrying extra weight for an extended period of time can damage your collagen and elastin fibers. As a result, your skin does not return to its original appearance after extreme weight loss. This is a common reason that patients undergo arm reduction surgery.
  • Prolonged sun exposure: The ultraviolet rays from the sun can cause photoaging, a condition in which your skin loses a significant amount of collagen. [1] Because collagen holds and tightens your skin structures together, sun-induced collagen loss can lead to the development of sagging skin on your upper arms.

Arm Reduction Before & After

What are the Benefits of an Arm Reduction?

  • Better body proportion
  • Increased self-confidence and self-esteem
  • More clothing options
  • A more well-toned appearance of your upper arms

How is an Arm Reduction Performed?

The procedure is typically performed using general anesthesia to prevent any discomfort and promote patient safety during the procedure. Once the anesthesia has taken effect, Dr Briggs will create an incision depending on the amount of extra skin present in your upper arms. To reshape your upper arms, Dr Briggs will remove excess skin and fat. Liposuction may be used to remove the fat out of the target area. Once the desired arm appearance is achieved, Dr Briggs will close the incisions using internal dissolvable stitches and external stitched that will stay n place until your post-operative appointment. This provides greater support to the tissues of your arms during the healing process. You will have a dressing placed over your wound to protect it from any injury.

What to Expect After Arm Reduction Surgery?

Immediately after the procedure, it’s normal to feel tender and experience some soreness on the surgical incisions on your upper arms. Before your discharge from hospital, either Dr Briggs or the ward nurse will provide you instructions regarding care of your surgical incisions, proper wound dressing change if applicable, signs and symptoms to watch out for, and when to return for follow-up. Depending on your condition and the extent of your surgery, you will be advised to avoid heavy lifting for 1 to 2 weeks. After 6 weeks, your surgical scars will be firm and may appear pinkish. After 6 months, you should be able to notice a significant improvement in the appearance of your upper arms. As with any type of body contouring surgery, the area will continue to settle for 12-18 months before the final results are apparent.
